Deploy Adobe Analytics Using Dynamic Tag Management

Step-by-step instructions to add Adobe Analytics using Adobe Dynamic Tag Management (DTM).

We assume that you have already been granted access to DTM. If you do not have a DTM account, follow the instructions in Getting Started in the Dynamic Tag Management Product Documentation.

This section contains the following information:

Add a Property

  1. Log in to Dynamic Tag Management, then click Add Property.

Tip: Plan ahead to determine how many web properties you need. See Planning Your Migration to DTM in the Getting Started with Adobe Dynamic Tag Management guide.
  2. Specify the name and base URL of the property.

For information about Advanced Settings, see Create a Web Property in the Dynamic Tag Management Product Documentation.

  3. Click Create Property.

  4. Open the property by clicking its name.

Add the Adobe Analytics Tool

  1. Click Add a Tool.

  2. Fill in the following fields in the Add a Tool dialog box:

    Field Description

    Tool Type

Select Adobe Analytics from the drop-down list.

    Tool Name

Specify a descriptive name for the tool.

    Configuration Method

There are two options for configuring the tool:

    • Automatic: Uses the Adobe Marketing Cloud or Web Services to authenticate.

    • Manual: Manually type in the report suite ID and tracking server.

Note: We strongly suggest using the Automatic configuration method if you are an Adobe Analytics Premium customer and want to access additional eVars and events.

    Web Services Username

    Specify your Web Services username.*

    Shared Secret

    Specify your shared secret.*

*Shared secret credentials are located in Adobe Analytics under Admin Tools > Company Settings > Web Services. You can also log in to Adobe Analytics, click the account icon in the upper right corner, then click your Edit Account. If the shared secret does not appear here, the user must be added to the Web Services group within Analytics.

  3. Click Create Tool.

Configure the Adobe Analytics Tool

Note: The fields and options in the UI not mentioned below are optional and can be configured later. For more information on those options, see the sections in Add Adobe Analytics Tool in the Dynamic Tag Management Product Documentation.
  1. Specify one or more report suites to send your data to. If you have enabled automatic configuration, a list of matching report suites appears as you begin to type.

An important concept in DTM is the idea of a single web property having both a staging library and a production library.

The staging library contains all of the rules, tools, and data elements configured in the web property. The production library includes only the rules, tools, and data elements that are approved and published.

  2. Expand the General section and fill in the following fields (all other fields are optional):

    Field Description

    Character Set

Select the desired character encoding set.

    Currency Code

    Select the desired currency code.

    Tracking Server

If you are using a specific tracking server, such as a first party cookie, specify the domain at which the image request and cookie is written

For more information about these settings, see General in the Dynamic Tag Management Product Documentation.

  3. Expand the Library Management section and fill in the following fields (all other fields are optional):

    Field Description

    Load Library At

Specifies where and when to load the page code.

We recommend that you use the Page Bottom setting.

    Code Configuration

Select Managed by Adobe to enable Dynamic Tag Management to manage your library.

If you select this option, the following option becomes available:

Library Version: Select the latest version from the Library Version menu.

For more information about these settings, see Library Management in the Dynamic Tag Management Product Documentation.

  4. Click Save Changes.

Add the Embed Code

After the Analytics settings are saved, the next step is to add the embed code to the page. This code is available under the Embed tab.

By default, Akamai is enabled.

For more information about the three options, see Embed Code and Hosting Options in the Dynamic Tag Management Product Documentation

For information about best practices for hosting, see DTM Technical Architecture and Hosting in the Getting Started with Adobe Dynamic Tag Management guide.

Test the Hosting Library

Adobe Analytics is now tracking data on the site with your Dynamic Tag Management staging library. Test to make sure the data is coming through on your staging site.

There are a few plug-ins you can use to test. For more information, see Dynamic Tag Management Plugins in the Dynamic Tag Management Product Documentation.

This example illustrates manual enablement of debug mode in the developer console.

  1. Enable Developer Tools.

  2. Type _satelitte.setDebug(true); into the console tab of the developer tools (alternatively, you can download the DTM Switch Plug-in to enable debugging and staging).

  3. Refresh the page.

If you see SATELLITE: load, the DTM library is embedded on the page and has loaded. Any tools or rules that have been added appear.

After testing is complete, follow the approval and publish process to move the staging environment to your public-facing production site.
